April is Fair Housing Month! This year marks the 44th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act.
The Civil Rights Act, more commonly known as the Fair Housing Law, was signed into law on April 11, 1968 just days after the assassination of civil rights leader - Martin Luther King, Jr. This law prohibits discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, and familial or disability status.
Raleigh County Community Action Association, Inc. is a supporter and advocate of the Fair Housing Law. In honor of Fair Housing Month, RCCAA will host a Fair Housing Awareness Day on Thursday, April 26 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at our 620 Johnstown Road – Beckley Office. The community is invited to attend.

The Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) was established by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This program provides rental and utility assistance to prevent homelessness, as well as funds to be used for re-housing those individuals and families that are currently homeless. This program was specifically designed for those individuals that have been affected by the economic downturn.
Raleigh County Community Action Association, Inc. is a supporter and advocate of the Fair Housing Law. In its efforts to promote Fair Housing, RCCAA will provide Fair Housing Awareness brochures at its Housing Office. These brochures are available upon request.

RCCAA's Summary of Eligibility CriteriaEligible participants will fall into one or more of the following categories:
Individuals/Families must be currently unemployed & recieving unemployment benefits or have applied for unemployment benefits
Have had a recent health condition that has caused a recent loss of, or decrease in income
Currently homeless
Fall below the income guidelines of 50% of the area median income for Raleigh County
